Carleton University\u2019s Institute of African Studies<\/a> and the Department of History<\/a> will host the lecture Moving Men: Labour Mobilizations to and from Africa During World War I<\/em><\/a> presented by Prof. Michelle Moyd (Indiana University).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is held in honour of Black History Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the First World War, hundreds of thousands of soldiers and labourers from Africa travelled across great distances to join the war effort. Men were recruited to fight in European colonial armies and join labour contingents that worked at European ports and other sites. In this lecture, Moyd will provide a bird\u2019s eye view of these vast oceanic and pedestrian labour migrations and their consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This talk will reflect on individual experiences of wartime travel \u2013 which could be harrowing, disorienting and deadly. These perspectives are necessary for understanding the massive scale and effects of this unprecedented mobilization for war, and its heavy reliance on various forms of African labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Michelle Moyd<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moyd is a historian of eastern Africa, with special interests in the region\u2019s history of soldiering and warfare. Her recent book, Violent Intermediaries: African Soldiers, Conquest, and Everyday Colonialism in German East Africa<\/em>, explores the social and cultural history of African soldiers in the colonial army of German East Africa \u2013 today\u2019s Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
