{"id":63717,"date":"2020-02-19T10:39:45","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T15:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/?p=63717"},"modified":"2025-08-19T09:36:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:36:32","slug":"emergency-recovery-plan-could-halt-catastrophic-collapse-in-worlds-freshwater-biodiversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/2020\/emergency-recovery-plan-could-halt-catastrophic-collapse-in-worlds-freshwater-biodiversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Recovery Plan Could Halt Catastrophic Collapse in World\u2019s Freshwater Biodiversity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Emergency Recovery Plan Could Halt Catastrophic Collapse in World\u2019s Freshwater Biodiversity\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<p>With biodiversity vanishing from rivers, lakes and wetlands at alarming speeds, a new scientific paper outlines an emergency recovery plan to reverse the rapid decline in the world\u2019s freshwater species and habitats \u2013 and safeguard the Earth\u2019s life support systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published today in <em>BioScience<\/em>, the emergency recovery plan co-authored by Carleton University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/steven-j-cooke\/\">Steven Cooke<\/a>, professor in the Department of Biology, calls for urgent steps to tackle threats that have led to an 83 per cent collapse in freshwater species populations and the loss of 30 per cent of freshwater ecosystems since 1970 \u2013 ecosystems that provide us with water, food, livelihoods and protection from floods, droughts and storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed by a global team from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Conservation International, the University of Cardiff, Carleton and other eminent organizations and academic institutions, this is the first comprehensive plan to protect and restore freshwater habitats which host more species per square kilometre than land or oceans \u2013 and are losing this extraordinary biodiversity two or three times faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The six-point plan prioritizes solutions rooted in cutting-edge science that have already proven successful in certain locations: letting rivers flow more naturally, reducing pollution, protecting critical wetland habitats, ending overfishing and unsustainable sand mining in rivers and lakes, controlling invasive species, and safeguarding and restoring river connectivity through better planning of dams and other infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critically, with governments meeting in November to agree on a new global deal to conserve and restore biodiversity at a landmark conference on the Convention on Biological Diversity, the authors recommend some new targets, including on restoring water flows, controlling illegal and unregulated sand mining in rivers, and improving management of freshwater fisheries that feed hundreds of millions of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNowhere is the biodiversity crisis more acute than in the world\u2019s rivers, lakes and wetlands \u2013 with over a quarter of freshwater species now heading for extinction,\u201d said Dave Tickner, WWF-UK chief freshwater advisor and lead author on the paper. \u201cThe Emergency Recovery Plan can halt this decades-long decline and restore life to our dying freshwater ecosystems, which underpin all of our societies and economies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covering approximately one per cent of the Earth\u2019s surface, rivers, lakes and freshwater wetlands are home to 10 per cent of all species and more fish species than in all the world\u2019s oceans. But they are rapidly disappearing. Populations of freshwater megafauna \u2013 such as river dolphins, sturgeon, beavers, crocodiles and giant turtles \u2013 crashed by 88 per cent in the past half century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe causes of the global collapse in freshwater biodiversity are no secret, yet the world has consistently failed to act, turning a blind eye to the worsening crisis even though healthy freshwater ecosystems are central to our survival,\u201d said Cooke. \u201cThe emergency recovery plan provides an ambitious roadmap to safeguarding freshwater biodiversity \u2013 and all the benefits it provides to people across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan highlights a variety of measures that together will transform the management and health of rivers, lakes and wetlands, such as treating more than 20 per cent of sewage before it is flushed into nature, avoiding dams on the world\u2019s remaining free-flowing rivers, and expanding and strengthening protected areas in partnership with local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll the solutions in the emergency recovery plan have been tried and tested somewhere in the world: they are realistic, pragmatic and they work,\u201d said James Dalton, director of IUCN\u2019s Global Water Programme. \u201cWe are calling on governments, investors, companies and communities to prioritize freshwater biodiversity \u2013 often neglected by the conservation and water management worlds.
