The event will be moderated by journalist Matthew Pearson (MJ\/09).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lecture is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/events\/research-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Public Affairs (FPA) Research Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When<\/strong>: Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 7 p.m.<br>\n<strong>Where<\/strong>: Room 2220, Second floor, Richcraft Hall, Carleton<br>\n<strong>Info<\/strong>: This event is free and open to the public. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/cu_event\/21st-annual-kesterton-lecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Registration is available online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media are invited to attend the event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a foreign correspondent for CBC, ABC, CNN, CBS, as well as a host and correspondent for Al Jazeera, MacVicar has covered it all \u2014 from global tensions and terrorism to war crimes and regional strife. Her journalism has taken her to troubled areas around the world and earned numerous accolades \u2013 including three Emmy Awards, a DuPont Award and a Peabody Award. But at what price?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this lecture, MacVicar will share candid insights about her experiences in the field and discuss the growing challenges facing journalists reporting from the edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A reception will follow the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Sheila MacVicar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacVicar began her career at the CBC as a national correspondent before becoming the network\u2019s first woman appointed as a full-time foreign correspondent before moving on to become a co-host <em>of The Fifth Estate<\/em>. Her reporting has taken her from the Balkans and the Middle East to South East Asia and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, she developed and hosted Al Jazeera America\u2019s foreign policy show <em>Compass<\/em> and was the senior correspondent for the long-form current affairs broadcast, <em>America Tonight<\/em>, leading investigative teams reporting on intelligence and social issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has developed a journalism series for Germany\u2019s ZDF, TVO and nine other European broadcasters. She co-created and hosted the CQ\/RollCall podcast series <em>Oversight<\/em>. MacVicar is co-founder and president of 4th Act Factual, a documentary film company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Matthew Pearson <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pearson&nbsp;is an Ottawa-based journalist who has worked for CBC Radio, the <em>Ottawa Citizen<\/em>, and the <em>Times-Colonist<\/em> newspaper in Victoria, B.C. As a Michener-Deacon Fellow for Journalism Education, he developed a new teaching module for journalism schools to help prepare students for reporting on traumatic incidents and the people affected by them. He has presented this innovative work on trauma-informed journalism at conferences, journalism schools and in newsrooms across Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Kesterton Lecture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism\/special-events\/kesterton-lecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Kesterton Lecture<\/a>, Carleton Journalism\u2019s signature annual public event, honours Wilfred Kesterton\u2019s pioneering contribution to journalism education in Canada. Saskatchewan-born Kesterton was a newspaperman and Second World War veteran when he became one of the earliest graduates of Carleton\u2019s Bachelor of Journalism program in 1949.
