With uncanny prescience, Nawaz has predicted many of the details of the current pandemic, although she began researching the novel in 2013 and had submitted her manuscript before the current COVID-19 crisis broke out. The paperback came out on August 25, 2020 and in the first week of its publication was immediately on the Toronto Star’s 10 bestsellers list.

About the Author

Nawaz grew up in Ottawa and studied at Lisgar Collegiate and Carleton University where she graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Humanities. She completed an MA at the University of Manitoba and attended the writing studio program at the Banff Centre for the Arts. After writing shorter fiction, her first full-length novel Bone and Bread in 2013, set in Ottawa and Montreal, won the Quebec Writers’ Federation fiction award and was a finalist on CBC’s Canada Reads in 2016. Her current novel, Songs for the End of the World, is already a Canadian bestseller and she has clearly drawn on her background as a student at Carleton for some of the details. Nawaz now lives in Montreal.

Media Contact
Steven Reid
Media Relations Officer
Carleton University
613-265-6613
Steven.Reid3@carleton.ca

Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/Cunewsroom
COVID 19 Updates: https://newsroom.carleton.ca/coronavirus-covid-19/messages/

The Ottawa Society for the Arts and Sciences (OSFAS) will host a virtual question and answer session with Carleton University alumna Saleema Nawaz, author of Songs for the End of the World.
