This presents a set of challenges for diagnosis as it is a common symptom of many other medical conditions. The creation of unobtrusive remote monitoring tools for medical professionals may aid in COVID-19 diagnosis, monitoring and contact tracing and could lead to more efficient and accurate treatments.

In this talk, Cohen-McFarlane will discuss the development of what may be one of the first internationally available-upon-request database of COVID-19 cough events, created by a team of researchers at Carleton.

She will review numerous cough events obtained through public media interviews with COVID-19 patients and explain how they can be analyzed to address the frequency, severity and characteristics of the cough and ultimately assist in diagnosis. She will also provide insight into how the findings from Carleton’s research team can be used for rapid exploration and algorithm development, which can be applied to more extensive datasets and potentially real-time applications.

About the Speaker

Cohen-McFarlane’s research focuses on developing a system to monitor and track non-speech human sounds (e.g. cough, sneeze, snore, etc.). This would have applications in smart-home monitoring of respiratory health conditions, including COVID-19, that are prevalent in the older adult population.

Media Contact

Adam Landry
Communications Officer
Faculty of Engineering and Design
Carleton University
adam.landry@carleton.ca

Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/Cunewsroom
COVID 19 Updates: https://newsroom.carleton.ca/coronavirus-covid-19/messages/

Carleton University biomedical engineering PhD student Madison Cohen-McFarlane will host Ingenious Talks Online: Detecting COVID-19 Through Cough Sounds.
