Blue/green screen techniques, also known as Chromakey, have been an integral part of the visual effects process within the post-production industry for many years, but new alternatives are now in development that will improve post-production efficacy, save labour costs and foster creative breakthroughs.

In this talk, Zhu will discuss how she and another Carleton researcher have developed what they believe to be the first five-view camera system prototype, which perceives real-life scenes from both horizontal and vertical directions and fills in blind spots to generate more accurate depth sequences.

She will explain the methodology behind their work, showcase sample shots and discuss how the technology can be applied in visual effects composition, 2D to 3D conversion, augmented reality, virtual reality, machine vision and more.

About the Speaker

Zhu’s research aims to help streamline the film industry’s post-production pipeline by simplifying element extraction procedures that suffer from high-cost setup or tedious workflow. By developing a system that enables live-action elements to be composited with spatial depth, she looks to produce a more realistic and cost-effective visual effects result.

Media Contact
Steven Reid
Media Relations Officer
Carleton University
613-265-6613
Steven.Reid3@carleton.ca

Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/Cunewsroom
COVID 19 Updates: https://newsroom.carleton.ca/coronavirus-covid-19/messages/

Carleton University Information Technology PhD student Lea (ChangAn) Zhu will host Ingenious Talks Online: A New Affordable Breakthrough in Visual Effects Technology.
