Carleton University is pleased to announce Krista Craven (she\/her\/hers) will be joining the Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities<\/a> (EIC) effective June 1, 2021 as the inaugural Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Learning Specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her new role, Craven will collaborate, co-develop and deliver EDI curricular and teaching support for faculty and contract instructors to enhance the integration of decolonized, anti-racist and inclusive practices. She will provide advice to department and campus partners in developing education and opportunities for professional services staff. Students will also benefit from Craven\u2019s work as she co-creates learning and engagement opportunities in areas of human rights and equity, diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craven has collaboratively designed and co-taught courses with faculty members across a variety of disciplines from the humanities to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to enhance inclusion and equity in the classroom. Her other teaching experience include a variety of courses that critically examine oppressive systems and the ways in which individuals, groups and communities navigate and resist these systems while working toward a more equitable, just and free society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craven is currently an associate professor of Community and Justice Studies and Chair of the Justice and Policy Studies Department at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Her research over the past several years looks at how colonial systems and their legacies function and how individuals and communities understand, resist and attempt to transform them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has engaged in multiple community-based, participatory research projects regarding youth-led community organizing, immigrant justice, refugee resettlement, and housing and homelessness. She recently completed a multi-year study with two of her colleagues that examined the influence of implicit bias training on members of a police department in the midwestern United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craven earned a PhD in Community Research and Action from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She also holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in Interdisciplinary Leadership Studies from the University of New Brunswick, a master\u2019s in Environmental Studies from York University and a master\u2019s teaching degree from the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
