This ambitious project brings Carleton into the heart of high-tech community and builds on ground-breaking research partnerships and successful co-op relationships with companies based in the Kanata North region.

“This unique facility in Kanata North fully leverages our proximity to this national innovation hub and further enhances Carleton’s reputation as a leader in high-tech research, teaching and innovation,” said Carleton President Benoit Antoine-Bacon. “In close contact with tech industry leaders, our students will cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset and benefit from hands-on learning towards leadership positions in this critical sector.”

Carleton’s new centre will include collaboration space, meeting rooms, a café and garden terrace where faculty, staff and students can connect with companies on site. The centre’s neighbours are anchor tenants L-Spark software accelerator and the Kanata North Business Association.

“Carleton will work with Kanata North businesses to develop new talent pipelines and opportunity for cross-disciplinary, work-integrated learning, and our student entrepreneurs will more easily connect with Kanata North businesses,” says Dana Brown, dean of the Sprott School of Business.

“Overall, Carleton seeks to help create a feedback loop where tech park strengths support university research and learning, which in turn bolsters private-sector success that feeds back into the university.”

Beyond expanding Carleton’s existing strategic research partnerships with the high-tech community, the new centre will provide professional development executive education programs, including the new Intellectual Property Certificate, to bolster the management and leadership skills of tech employees. These custom and open enrolment programs, developed in partnership with industry, will help develop future innovation and business leaders and address longstanding talent acquisition, talent management and succession planning challenges facing the region.

Carleton has a long relationship with the Kanata North business community. Researchers from Carleton’s Faculty of Engineering and Design, for example, have been involved in more than 45 research projects with Kanata North-based companies over the last decade.

Kanata-North companies have provided 565 work terms for 350 Carleton students since the summer of 2019, including placements with Ericsson, Nokia, Solace, Blackberry, Canopy Growth, Ciena, Cisco Systems, Flex, Konsgberg Geospatial, Mitel, Pleora Technologies, the Portia Learning Centre, Wind River and You.i TV.

Media Contact
Steven Reid
Media Relations Officer
Carleton University
613-265-6613
Steven.Reid3@carleton.ca

Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/Cunewsroom
COVID 19 Updates: https://newsroom.carleton.ca/coronavirus-covid-19/messages/

This fall, Carleton will open a purpose-built innovation space at Kanata North’s Hub350, a brand new ecosystem where industry, finance and academic partners will collaborate and connect with resources.
