\n Carleton Graduate Student Noah Schwartz Final Five Winner of Federal Storytellers Competition\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University PhD Political Science graduate Noah Schwartz is a Top 5 winner of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) 2020 Storytellers Showcase Competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese finalists intrigued us, engaged us, entertained us and moved us,\u2019\u2019 said SSHRC President Ted Hewitt. “Their investment of creative energy and effective research communication skills has brought ideas to life in new and inspiring ways. Congratulations to our Final Five winners!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schwartz entered a three-minute video describing his SSHRC-funded research on better understanding the National Rifle Association in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI spent the summer of 2019 with the National Rifle Association (NRA) trying to find out more about how the organization tells stories in order to build a political community of gun owners,\u201d Schwartz says. \u201cI wanted to study the stories that the NRA told, but more than that I wanted to understand what guns mean to the ordinary people that use them and why these stories resonate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judging the top 25 finalists were Daniel Daliri, research analyst in the Office of the Comptroller General; Madeline Johnson, senior policy analyst at Global Affairs Canada; Marc LePage, former president and CEO of Genome Canada; Kathy No\u00ebl, deputy editor-in-chief of The Conversation <\/em>Canada; and Manon Tremblay, senior director of Indigenous Directions at Concordia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 competition will be launched in the fall of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
