As well, four Carleton professors were named as Early Researcher Award (ERA) winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOngoing support and funding by the Province of Ontario is essential to ensuring that our researchers \u2013 particularly our early-career faculty \u2013 have the resources they need to excel in discovery and innovation,\u201d said Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International).&nbsp; \u201cWe\u2019d like to thank the province for recognizing Carleton\u2019s research excellence through their investments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s ERA recipients are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sppa\/people\/clarke-amanda\/\"><strong>Amanda Clarke<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarke, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sppa\/\">School of Public Policy and Administration<\/a>, studies public-sector reform, policy-making and civic engagement in the digital age. The funding will support groundbreaking research in the study of public sector data governance and provide much-needed evidence to strengthen data and digital reforms underway in Ontario and globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/heath-macmillan\/\"><strong>Heath MacMillan<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacMillan, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/\">Department of Biology<\/a>, studies how temperature impacts animal physiology by building models of how stress directly alters tissue function. He will lead a research team looking to uncover how microRNAs (small noncoding RNAs) program the physiology of fruit flies to modify their cold tolerance. This work will also help discover new ways to control winter survival in a mosquito species that spread diseases such as dengue fever, yellow fever and the Zika virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/laura-madokoro\/\"><strong>Laura Madokoro<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madokoro, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/\">Department of History<\/a>, focuses her research on the history of race, refugees and humanitarianism. This funding will support a new research program exploring the history of displacement, disasters and migration in a Canadian and global context. The research will investigate the relationship between domestic relief efforts and the growth of international humanitarianism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/npsia\/people\/alex-s-wilner\/\">Alex Wilner<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilner, a researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/npsia\/\">the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs<\/a>, is an internationally-renowned scholar of deterrence theory. With this funding, he will examine if deterrence theory can be used to defend state, non-state and sub-state actors from malicious cyberattacks.
