Honoured speakers from the Indigenous community and Carleton community members, including President Benoit-Antoine Bacon, gathered to thank The Joyce Family Foundation for selecting Carleton as their partner.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCarleton is deeply grateful for the vision and generosity of The Joyce Family Foundation and we are pleased to match their transformative gift with an additional $2.5-million to support other Indigenous Initiatives,\u201d says Bacon.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Carleton\u2019s matching investment will support bursaries, mentorship, Indigenous programming, student recruitment and create conditions for Indigenous student success. It is an important step towards meeting the objectives of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/2020\/kinamagawin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin<\/a>\u2014meaning Learning Together\u2014Carleton\u2019s ambitious Indigenous Initiatives Strategy that was approved in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith Carleton\u2019s commitment to Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin and a match to The Joyce Family Foundation\u2019s own gift, the Board knew that this would be the ideal place for on-going and far-reaching support of Indigenous students, here at Carleton, in the nation\u2019s capital,\u201d says Ed Lumley, chair of The Joyce Family Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tang-067-5865-forHomepage_edited.jpg\" alt=\"Members of the Carleton community associated with the Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin Celebration and Funding Announcement stand for a photo..\" class=\"wp-image-79915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Tang-067-5865-forHomepage_edited.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Tang-067-5865-forHomepage_edited-400x240.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Tang-067-5865-forHomepage_edited-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Tang-067-5865-forHomepage_edited-768x460.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Tang-067-5865-forHomepage_edited-700x419.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Tang-067-5865-forHomepage_edited-200x120.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"indigenous-students-experience-barriers-to-higher-education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indigenous Students Experience Barriers to Higher Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Indigenous young people are the first generation of post-secondary learners in their family and that can be an overwhelming experience, says Benny Michaud, director of Carleton\u2019s Centre for Indigenous Initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that there are a lot of Indigenous people who want to go to university, who are eligible in terms of admissions, but may not be able to see that journey through because there is a lack of financial support,\u201d says Michaud. \u201cThat is why the support of The Joyce Family Foundation is so critical and significant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kahente Horn-Miller, assistant vice-president of Indigenous Initiatives at Carleton, says the gift will make a meaningful difference to Indigenous students, particularly those who are balancing their education with parenting. Horn-Miller herself attended school as an Indigenous mother, with little support beyond her own family and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;An award like this would have made all the difference to me,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt does make all the difference, especially as we bring our children to Ottawa and to university with us. They are there alongside us and to have that extra financial support means that we don\u2019t have to leave them behind. They can be with us, watching us and we can be the role models.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-joyce-family-foundation-gift-will-have-a-lasting-impact\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Joyce Family Foundation Gift Will Have a Lasting Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Joyce Family Foundation Bursaries will be available to undergraduate Indigenous students as well as graduates of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/iesp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indigenous Enriched Support Program<\/a> so that they might continue their studies beyond high school and be supported and mentored every step of the way. The bursaries will provide recipients with up to $20,000 over four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the bursaries will be set aside for Algonquin students from Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg and Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation\u2014two Indigenous communities within whose territory Carleton is situated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton has a diverse population that includes Indigenous Peoples from the Ottawa area and close relationships with local high schools with significant numbers of Indigenous students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside his own studies, Kinistino will work closely with incoming Indigenous students as a mentor and to provide information about funding supports, such as The Joyce Family Foundation Bursaries for Indigenous Students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is an honour to get to work with some of those students who will be potential recipients of these generous bursaries,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cody Kinistino\u2019s path from high school to university was punctuated by a 17-year gap, filled, as he says, \u201cwith difficult circumstances.\u201d During that time, he experienced homelessness, substance abuse and recidivism.
