\n Three Carleton University Researchers Elected to the Royal Society of Canada\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University\u2019s <\/span>Steven Cooke<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Jesse Stewart<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Rowan Thomson<\/span><\/a> have been elected to the <\/span>Royal Society of Canada (RSC)<\/span><\/a> in recognition of the high level of excellence and potential demonstrated during their careers.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooke, a professor in Carleton\u2019s <\/span>Department of Biology<\/span><\/a>, has been named an RSC Fellow<\/span>. <\/span>The RSC fellowship comprises more than 2,000 Canadian scholars, artists and scientists, who have been peer-elected as the best in their field. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

B<\/span>iology professors across the world <\/span>elected<\/span><\/span> Cooke<\/span> f<\/span>or his <\/span>ground-breaking <\/span>work in <\/span>freshwater biodiversity conservation, animal biotelemetry and fisheries science. <\/span>His <\/span>research<\/span>, which spans the natural and social sciences, <\/span>helps define<\/span> policy and research worldwide. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewart<\/span>, a music professor in <\/span><\/span>Carleton\u2019s School for Studies in Art and Culture<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/a> has been named a member of the RSC College of New Scholars, <\/span>Artists<\/span> and Scientists. The College consists of mid-career leaders who provide the RSC with a multi<\/span>–<\/span>generational <\/span>capacity<\/span> to help Canada and the world address major challenges and seize new opportunitie<\/span>s.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewart is an award-winning composer, percussionist, artist, researcher, and educator. In addition to being highly commissioned as a composer and artist, he has published widely on subjects including jazz, improvisation, hip hop, and experimental music. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomson, a professor in Carleton\u2019s <\/span>Department of Physics<\/span><\/a> and Canada Research Chair in Radiotherapy Physics, is also joining the RSC College. Described as a champion for making science more inclusive, Thomson\u2019s research works to improve radiation treatments for cancer.  Her results inform medical physics and radiation oncology practice internationally. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the RSC<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1882, the RSC comprises the academies of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences, and the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. The RSC recognizes excellence, advises the government and larger society, and promotes a culture of knowledge and innovation in Canada and with other national academies around the world.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Fellowship<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RSC fellowship comprises Canadian scholars, artists and scientists, who have been peer-elected as the best in their field. Fellows of the RSC are distinguished Canadians from all branches of learning who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life. Recognition by the RSC for career achievement is the highest honour an individual can achieve in the Arts, Social Sciences and Sciences. There are 2,558 active Fellows of the RSC.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the College<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists is Canada\u2019s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership. It comprises a fourth entity, along with the current three academies, within the RSC. The members of the college are Canadians and permanent residents who, at an early stage in their career, have demonstrated a high level of achievement. The criteria for election is excellence and membership is for seven years. Up to 80 members may be elected each year.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
