Cunningham<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton University researchers have received $1.65 million from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)<\/a> to support research and training in the area of permafrost, climate change and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 40 per cent of Canada&#8217;s land mass is underlain by permafrost, a layer of permanently frozen ground beneath the surface of the planet&#8217;s colder regions. says Gruber, who is also a Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/geography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Geography and Environmental Studies<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/a>. &#8220;This funding will help us meet this rising challenge by training the next generation of researchers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Bringing together investigators from seven Canadian universities, including two investigators and six additional collaborators from Carleton, the project provides a collaborative and integrative approach to help Canada&#8217;s North plan for the future by training highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows while also developing practical solutions for the adaptation of climate change effects to Canada&#8217;s permafrost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ultimately, this research will lead to tools that inform forward-looking permafrost decision-making,&#8221; said Rafik Goubran, Vice-President (Research and International).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Carleton has seen a 69 per cent increase in Tri-Agency funding since 2017, notably receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/top-canadian-science-and-engineering-prizes-for-carleton-researchers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two of the top Canadian science and engineering prizes<\/a> awarded by NSERC this past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSERC is the major federal agency responsible for funding natural sciences and engineering research in Canada.
