He impressed the advisory committee with an ambitious vision of Carleton as a top-tier university on both a national and international scale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were absolutely inspired by his goal of fostering a bold community of conscientious and adaptable global leaders who challenge the status quo and champion transformative change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"keeping-our-forward-momentum\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keeping Our Forward Momentum<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt will be an honour to serve in the important role of President and Vice-Chancellor at Carleton University,\u201d says Dr. Tettey.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cCarleton is a highly regarded university that is leveraging its accomplishments to propel itself to global leadership. It will be a privilege to be immersed in a community that is defined by values and a purpose that I share, and to help drive and sustain the university\u2019s momentum towards a future beaming with possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ushering in an exciting new era for Carleton, Dr. Tettey brings proven experience in implementing strategic and operational plans at major Canadian universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to his current role, Dr. Tettey was Dean of the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, both at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia, and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary. He began his academic career at Queen\u2019s University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the national level, Dr. Tettey has convened the National Dialogues and Action for Inclusive Higher Education and Communities since 2020, the first of which resulted in the creation of the Scarborough Charter and its Inter-institutional Forum. The Forum currently represents about 60 Canadian universities and colleges, including Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internationally, Dr. Tettey has served as a consultant and advisor to various global organizations, including the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, the Africa Capacity Building Foundation and the International Association of Universities. He is an elected Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and currently serves on the Board of CivicAction and on the advisory and editorial boards of various academic publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"an-empowered-community-of-kindred-spirits\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Empowered Community of Kindred Spirits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An established scholar with an extensive background in teaching, research and academic service, Dr. Tettey will also assume a tenured appointment as a professor in Carleton\u2019s Department of Political Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His interdisciplinary research expertise includes media, politics and civic engagement in Africa; the political economy of globalization and information technology in Africa; African higher education and the knowledge society; and transnational citizenship and the African diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am excited to join kindred spirits in extending the range and impact of my many years of work leading faculties, campuses and institutions to be exemplars of socially and globally conscious scholarship, teaching, learning and citizenship,\u201d says Dr. Tettey, who emphasized his commitment to \u201cfostering and sustaining an equitable, inclusive, healthy, caring and mutually supportive working and learning environment in which everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging and is empowered to flourish and to reach their fullest potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Tettey will commence his five-year appointment effective January 1, 2025, and succeeds Dr. Jerry Tomberlin, who was appointed Carleton\u2019s Interim President and Vice-Chancellor in September 2023 and will be staying on until the new year to facilitate this transition.
