The newest Carleton community appointees\u00a0include\u00a0leaders in\u00a0academia, art history,\u00a0law and human rights,\u00a0philanthropy,\u00a0politics\u00a0and the public service.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"companion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Companion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Honourable&nbsp;Rosalie Silberman Abella<\/strong>, (ALHD\/05),&nbsp;was named a Companion of the Order.&nbsp;In 2005,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/senate\/rosalie-silberman-abella\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton awarded Abella<\/a>&nbsp;the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to social and legal policy and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abella&nbsp;made history as&nbsp;the first Jewish woman&nbsp;appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004.&nbsp;Widely regarded as a leading voice&nbsp;on constitutional and human rights law, her&nbsp;opinions&nbsp;often&nbsp;cite&nbsp;foreign&nbsp;and&nbsp;international&nbsp;law. Her&nbsp;landmark constitutional rulings&nbsp;have&nbsp;significantly influenced the advancement of equality and human rights globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"officer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Officer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roseann Runte<\/strong>, (Past President and Vice-Chancellor), was promoted to Officer of the Order. Runte served as Carleton\u2019s President and Vice-Chancellor from 2008 to 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visionary leader in academia and science, Runte led a period of significant academic growth and innovation, strengthening Carleton\u2019s research capacity. She launched more than 28 new academic programs, supported major investments in research infrastructure in areas such as energy,&nbsp;aerospace&nbsp;and health sciences, and advanced the largest fundraising campaign in the university\u2019s history.&nbsp;Runte also championed Carleton\u2019s first sexual violence prevention policy and elevated the university\u2019s national and international profile.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She later strengthened Canada\u2019s research capacity as head of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, securing federal support for research infrastructure across Canadian universities,&nbsp;colleges&nbsp;and research hospitals, and advancing funding mechanisms that strengthened capacity for world-class research and innovation nationwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Honourable&nbsp;Janice Charette<\/strong>, (BComm\/84, ALHD\/23),&nbsp;was named an Officer of the Order.&nbsp;Charette is an alum of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sprott School of Business<\/a>, graduating with a bachelor\u2019s degree in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/bachelor-of-commerce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commerce<\/a>.&nbsp;In 2023,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/senate\/janice-charette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton awarded Charette<\/a>&nbsp;the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of&nbsp;\u201coutstanding dedication and distinguished service to Canadians as&nbsp;clerk of the Privy Council, diplomat and humanitarian.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A widely respected former public servant&nbsp;and diplomat, Charette\u2019s&nbsp;four-decade career&nbsp;is&nbsp;distinguished by&nbsp;in-depth&nbsp;expertise&nbsp;of&nbsp;government,&nbsp;non-partisan&nbsp;leadership&nbsp;and a&nbsp;commitment to serving Canadians with integrity and&nbsp;dedication.&nbsp;Charette was&nbsp;a speaker at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/story\/challenging-mental-health-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Carleton Challenge Conference<\/a>, where she spoke&nbsp;about&nbsp;leadership\u2019s&nbsp;role&nbsp;in driving systemic&nbsp;and organizational change&nbsp;to address mental health in the federal public service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"member\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Member<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Susan Phillips<\/strong>, (MA\/81, PhD\/90, Professor Emerita), was named a member of the Order. A Carleton alum, Phillips graduated with master\u2019s and doctorate degrees in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">political science<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&nbsp;is professor emerita in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sppa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Public Policy &amp; Administration<\/a>, in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Public&nbsp;and&nbsp;Global Affairs<\/a>.&nbsp;In 2013,&nbsp;she&nbsp;founded Canada\u2019s only graduate program in philanthropy, which offers&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership<\/a>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the Graduate Diploma in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phillips\u2019s impactful career has shaped the field of non-profit research, guided hundreds of&nbsp;students&nbsp;and scholars, and influenced key public policy discussions. Her award-winning scholarship and editorial leadership have positioned Carleton as an international leader in non-profit and philanthropic studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Penny Dorothy&nbsp;Collenette<\/strong>, (BA\/87), was named a member of the Order.&nbsp;Collenette&nbsp;is an alum of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Public and Global Affairs<\/a>, graduating with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collenette&nbsp;is a prominent Canadian lawyer, educator and public commentator with a career spanning business,&nbsp;academia&nbsp;and politics. An advocate for women in leadership, she has worked to increase their representation in government and corporate sectors. Her&nbsp;expertise&nbsp;in public policy has made her a trusted and influential voice across the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reesa Greenberg<\/strong>, (Adjunct Professor), was named a member of the Order. Greenberg is a former adjunct professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/aah\/ba-art-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">art history<\/a> and served as chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cuag.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton University Art Gallery<\/a> Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenberg&#8217;s pioneering work in feminist and exhibition studies has shaped art history and museology in Canada. She has played a pivotal role in advancing the digital documentation of Canadian art and supporting key cultural institutions. Becoming a member recognizes outstanding contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity.
