{"id":21654,"date":"2016-10-05T10:19:25","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T14:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/northernstudies\/?page_id=21654"},"modified":"2018-02-22T15:04:47","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T20:04:47","slug":"graduate-diploma-in-northern-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/northernstudies\/graduate-diploma-in-northern-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Diploma in Northern Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"u-grid-item u-grid-item--1\">\n<p>The interdisciplinary Northern Studies graduate program at Carleton emphasizes northern environments and societies, and the policies that are developed to govern them.<\/p>\n<p>We offer two Graduate Diplomas (<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/northernstudies\/graduate-diploma-types\/\">Type 2 or 3<\/a>) for current graduate students and working professionals, as well as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/northern-studies-masters\/\">Master of Arts and Master of Science degree.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All of the programs are designed to give interdisciplinary training and experience in Northern Studies and all students are required to begin their studies with a field course of about one week. This is a residential field course that will take place too far from Ottawa for daily commuting. The introductory field course is a prerequisite for the core courses that are integral to the degrees and diplomas.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Studies program is a collaboration of six academic units:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Department of Geography and Environmental Studies<\/li>\n<li>Department of Sociology and Anthropology<\/li>\n<li>Department of Earth Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Department of Biology<\/li>\n<li>School of Public Policy and Administration<\/li>\n<li>School\u00a0of Indigenous and Canadian Studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Capital Advantage<\/h2>\n<p>Being based in Ottawa has provided an opportunity for us to develop strong links with government departments, industry, businesses and non-profit organizations headquartered in the Ottawa area. Ottawa also has a significant and fast growing First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit population and many national and regional Indigenous organizations are located here.
