Participants will explore the history of Canada&#8217;s nuclear industry, learn how nuclear power plants operate, examine lessons from major nuclear accidents, and assess emerging technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs). It will also examine federal nuclear policy, security threats, regulation, waste management, refurbishment and decommissioning, and Canada&#8217;s growing role as a global nuclear partner.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Learning Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Understand the history, structure, and operation of Canada&#8217;s nuclear sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Describe how Canadian nuclear power plant\u2019s function and how major accidents have shaped modern nuclear safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Assess Canada&#8217;s nuclear policy, regulatory framework, and critical infrastructure responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Identify the principal security threats facing the nuclear industry and evaluate mitigation measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Analyze the strategic opportunities and challenges associated with emerging nuclear technologies and Canada&#8217;s international nuclear partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who should attend:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This workshop is ideal for public servants, at all levels across Canada, whose work intersects with energy, critical infrastructure, climate, trade, foreign affairs, or national security, as well as those who are newly responsible for nuclear policy files. This workshop will also be useful for professionals working in the energy and critical infrastructure sectors, law enforcement and armed forces personnel, regulators, journalists, consultants, researchers, and anyone seeking a foundational understanding of Canada&#8217;s nuclear sector from a policy, security, and governance perspective. No technical or engineering background is required.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Featured facilitators:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stephanie Carvin is an Associate Professor at Carleton University and a former national security analyst. She holds an MSc and PhD from the London School of Economics and is the author of several books on Canadian national security.\u00a0\u00a0She teaches in the areas of national security, critical infrastructure protection, and cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Thomas Carvin, BAS has over 40 years\u2019 experience working in the electrical energy sector, including 30 at Ontario Hydro and Ontario Power Generation. He has taught nuclear education for the last four years for Ontario Power Generation, the Electrical Power Sector Contractors Association (EPSCA) and CANDU Energy Inc. (AtkinsR\u00e9alis).
