Applicant English Language Requirements

The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs requires all applicants whose native tongue is not English be tested for proficiency in the English language. Presenting a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) result, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or a Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment may satisfy this requirement.

The School of International Affairs requires a minimum TOEFL result of:

  • 250 (computer based) or
  • 100 iBT/Next Generation (minimum score of 25 in each of reading, writing, speaking and listening), prior to registration in your program. The institution code for Carleton is 0854 and the department code is 88. The results of the test will be sent directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.

The School of International Affairs requires a minimum CAEL result of 70 prior to registration in the MA program. This minimum result is the equivalent to a TOEFL score of 250 (computer based).
