DESCRIPTION:This talk presents a chapter from Professor Michael W. Manulak's forthcoming book The Ghost in Geneva: The Untold History of the League of Nations—And Why it Matters Now, which revisits the rise and fall of the League of Nations and challenges the familiar view that it was doomed from the beginning.



Drawing on the League’s successes and its collapse in the crises of the 1930s, it argues that failure was neither inevitable nor simply institutional: governments made choices that weakened collective security while misunderstanding their own national interests. The talk asks what this history reveals about power, principle, and the future of the United Nations—with implications for Canada’s role in the world today.
