{"id":324,"date":"2024-11-14T21:07:24","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T02:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/npsia\/?post_type=cu_people&#038;p=324"},"modified":"2024-12-06T14:09:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T19:09:44","slug":"niki-ashton","status":"publish","type":"cu_people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/npsia\/people\/niki-ashton\/","title":{"rendered":"Niki Ashton"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"mb-6 cu-pageheader cu-component-updated md:mb-12\">\n    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 pb-5 after:w-10 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px\">\n                    \n             \n                \n            <\/h1>\n\n    \n    <\/header>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Member of Parliament (Churchill\u2014Keewatinook Aski)<\/strong><br><strong>Master of Arts, International Affairs (\u201906)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2005, Niki Ashton was a student in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) when she learned that the New&nbsp;Democratic MP for her home riding of Churchill, Manitoba was breaking ranks with the party to oppose the Civil Marriage Act, which legalized same-sex marriage in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMy initial thought was that I wanted to get involved because I felt strongly about the NDP\u2019s position on human rights,\u201d<\/em> recalls Ms. Ashton, who was 23-years-old at the time. <em>\u201cThen a group of supportive feminists at home said, \u2018We want you to run and we\u2019re going to work with you.\u2019 So we embarked on months of really hard work and we won the riding nomination.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If was a fortuitous moment, as the opportunity presented itself just as Ms. Ashton was focusing on human rights and social justice within her graduate studies at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis was at the very core of what we were discussing and researching in NPSIA, but on a global level,\u201d<\/em> she says. <em>\u201cWe were talking about Canada\u2019s role in the world through a human rights lens, so this was definitely a case of thinking globally and acting locally.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008, Ms. Ashton was elected and found herself representing her home riding that covers all of northern Manitoba. The riding includes First Nations and northern communities facing&nbsp; \u201cextreme injustices including third-world living conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was part of where I came from, and we need to understand as Canadians that our identity, our history, our present and future are tied to the inequality and injustice the First Nations face,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen some progress recognizing the need for reconciliation, but there is still so much work to be done. We must tackle systemic racism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Ashton describes her NPSIA experience as a big part of her journey, including the support she received from professors who were \u201cvery encouraging\u201d of her desire to get into politics, despite the fact that she was mid-way through her degree program. She also points to the advantage of studying in the nation\u2019s capital, where she was exposed to the workings of the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThompson, Manitoba is pretty far away,\u201d she says. \u201cHere, I had discussions with everyone from professors to Members of Parliament, who helped me visualize what being in Parliament and in Ottawa might look like,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Norman Paterson School also helped instill in her a need to fight for social justice, something that she continues to foster as she pursues a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Manitoba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomething that I take to heart is that I\u2019m here to represent people who are fighting back and whose voices are often not heard or are silenced,\u201d explains Ms. Ashton. \u201cThere are incredible people making a difference every day in our communities.
