Apply early to receive early consideration for admission and funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We begin reviewing files on <strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">October 1<\/strong>&nbsp;and will send out admission offers on a rolling basis until the program is filled.<\/p>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"academic-requirements\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Academic Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Admission into the Ph.D. program will be judged primarily on the applicant\u2019s ability to undertake research successfully and his\/her prospects for completion of the program. The normal requirement for admission to the doctoral program is a Master\u2019s degree in the social sciences with a minimum A- (80%-84%) GPA. A number of years of work experience is also desirable, though not mandatory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NPSIA\u2019s PhD program is multidisciplinary. Applicants are required to have prior training in international relations and economics. The normal requirement is at least one course in international relations, one course in introductory macroeconomics (0.5 credit) and one course in introductory microeconomics (0.5 credit), plus one senior undergraduate-level&nbsp;economics course. In addition, students who are admitted to the doctoral program but lack sufficient specialization in their fields of study may be required to take additional courses at the graduate level in preparation for their field seminars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"language-requirement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language Requirement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs requires applicants whose native tongue is not English to be tested for proficiency in English, with the exception for those who obtained their Bachelor&#8217;s or Master&#8217;s degree within the past three years in a country in which the primary language is English, and where the language of instruction in the relevant educational institution was English. Admissions are open until the program is filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Admission conditions:<\/strong> Students who lack sufficient background at the graduate level in international affairs will be required to take supplementary courses extra to degree prior to admission. For applicants who do not have any formal training in economics, they must complete introductory micro and macro economics plus one course at the senior undergraduate level to be considered for admission. For those who do not have any formal training in international relations, they must complete an IR course prior to admission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>International students:<\/strong> Carleton receives a large number of high quality applications from international students each year for a limited number of spaces. Funding from Carleton (including teaching and research assistantships) for international students is limited and is only available to a few outstanding international applicants. Therefore, international students must have sufficient funds to support their study in Canada. Successful applicants to NPSIA are notified towards the end of March.
