Career Kickstart! Employment Pathways for College and University Students

An event aimed at “kick-starting” the career students and recent graduates with disabilities from Algonquin, Carleton, La Cité and the University of Ottawa, by learning more about employment pathways available to them that could lead to meaningful career opportunities while building their skills and enhancing their professional experiences.

Students engaged in round-table discussions to exchange ideas in a safe, confidential and inclusive environment and explore their career and employment needs and access to available campus support services.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) presented on navigating the application process for Federal Government, focusing on Public Service graduate recruitment programs like the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP). Other presentations from PSC post-secondary recruiters explained the many career pathways available for students with disabilities and how students can prepare for upcoming recruitment campaigns.

The evening concluded with a PSC Networking Showcase representing various government departments where students had one-on-one discussions with employers to explore potential opportunities.

 


Accessible Employer Showcase – Career Connections Networking Reception

This series of events was for University students who identify as having a visible or non-visible disability interested in learning more about employers who provide accessible working environments.  Held at our four partner institutions, it was created to help students and recent graduates meet with businesses of all sizes from the region who understand and value the benefits of an inclusive and accessible workplace. At this “Career Connections Networking Reception”, students and grads had the opportunity to connect and network with employers to explore meaningful career opportunities with organizations who understand the value of creating a diverse, inclusive and accessible workplace. Our Networking Ambassadors provided students with on the spot guidance and support to facilitate conversations with the employers they wanted to meet. These events also offered an “Ideas Exchange Speakers Corner” where students heard from organizations committed to employing the right person for the job and heard success stories first hand from the employee.
