In Canada, Donor-Advised Funds represent a fast-growing part of charitable assets: DAFs rose to almost $10.5 billion by the end of 2023. Below are recent reports about the bad, the good and the worthy related to DAFs in Canada and the US.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>A 2026 report offers the first research in Canada about the strained relationship between DAF foundations and operating charities \u2013 and what to do about it. Growing Together: Informing a positive dialogue between charities and DAF foundations through knowledge, engagement and transparency<\/a><\/em> is 60 pages and was written by Dr. Sharilyn Hale<\/a> and Keith Sj\u00f6gren<\/a>. It’s based on 60 interviews with leaders at DAF foundations and operating charities in Canada and on data from a survey of 1,000 registered charities, as well as data from tax filings with Canada Revenue Agency. Up to 25,000 charities in Canada are benefiting each year from at least one gift from a DAF. The report is essential reading for executives of operating charities and foundations that provide DAFs.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>The Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP)<\/a> surveyed approximately 1,000 registered charities in Canada on March 11, 2026, and found that more than half received DAF grants or gifts in the past year. Their report, titled Weekly Reports: #4.06 Donor Advised Funds<\/em><\/a>, explores charities\u2019 relationships with DAFs and how these funds are shaping parts of the philanthropic landscape. The report contains six graphs of data and two pages of anonymous, DAF-related quotes from charities.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Improving the Regulation of Canadian Foundations with Donor Advised Funds<\/em><\/a> (2025), a paper by Malcolm Burrows<\/a> for the Pemsel Case Foundation, examines DAFs and proposes ways to address transparency, oversight and governance issues while preserving DAFs\u2019 philanthropic benefits. The Pemsel Case Foundation is mandated to undertake research, education and litigation interventions to help clarify and develop the law related to Canadian charities.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a>Impact Investing and Donor-Advised Funds: Challenges and Opportunities with a View to the Future<\/em><\/a> (2025), by\u00a0Dr. Sharilyn Hale and Keith Sjogren <\/a>at Watermark Philanthropic Counsel, for TwinRiver Capital, answers the question: If given the opportunity, is there a desire from philanthropic actors to generate social\/environmental returns now while making decisions about future giving in Canada? \"\"<\/a>Empowering Philanthropy, An Overview of Donor-Advised Funds<\/em><\/a> (2025) is from a working group of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners co-chaired by Malcolm Burrows<\/a> and Nicola Elkins<\/a>, with Keith Sj\u00f6gren, the lead author. The report offers a comprehensive overview of current practices and common issues that are often experienced by foundation and charity executives, fundraisers, donors and professional advisors. The CAGP Foundation offers a suite of five practical resources, including a comprehensive guide.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Annual DAF Report 2025<\/em><\/a>, by the US-based Donor Advised Fund Research Collaborative (DAFRC), draws on data from Internal Revenue Service Form 990, Schedule D, for fiscal year 2024, and provides aggregate data on the number of DAF accounts, contributions to DAFs, grants from DAFs, DAF assets, payout rate and average account size in the US.<\/p>\n
