It began as a private foundation, and its founder, Chuck Feeney, who had made his fortune with airport Duty Free Shoppers, believed that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticphilanthropies.org\/news\/the-atlantic-philanthropies-signs-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giving while living<\/a> is more fun than giving while dead,\u201d serving as an inspiration for <a href=\"https:\/\/givingpledge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Giving Pledge<\/a>. The foundation took on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticphilanthropies.org\/issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">big issues<\/a> \u2013 peace in Northern Ireland, biomed research, racial equity, Viet Nam\u2019s healthcare system, and more. In 2002, Feeney committed that the foundation would spend to zero and wind down by 2020. Not an easy task.
