{"id":5277,"date":"2021-11-25T20:09:41","date_gmt":"2021-11-26T01:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/?p=5277"},"modified":"2024-11-24T19:57:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-25T00:57:32","slug":"mpnl-award-for-black-emerging-fundraising-professionals-lets-help-elevate-black-minds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/2021\/mpnl-award-for-black-emerging-fundraising-professionals-lets-help-elevate-black-minds\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cLet\u2019s Help Elevate Black Minds\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherlynassam.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sherlyn Assam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with the Carleton University community, the Black Canadian Fundraisers&#8217; Collective (BCFC) is collecting donations for the <em>MPNL Award for Black Emerging Fundraising Professionals<\/em> &#8212; the second annual award for Black students enrolled in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MPNL program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-bttn u-text-transform-u u-text-align-c\"><a class=\"c-bttn__link\" href=\"https:\/\/futurefunder.carleton.ca\/giving-fund\/mpnl-award-for-black-emerging-fundraising-professionals\/\">Donate to the award here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spearheaded by BCFC founder Nneka Allen and MPNL alumna M\u00fathon\u00ed Kar\u00eduk\u00ed, the award promotes Black leadership within the philanthropic and nonprofit sector by making education more accessible through financial support. It\u2019s awarded to Black Canadians with aspiring fundraising careers and those working as professional fundraisers.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the support of the BCFC and Carleton\u2019s community of donors in 2020, the <em>MPNL Award for Black Emerging Fundraising Professionals<\/em> was given to four students, changing their personal, educational and professional experiences in the philanthropic sector. The BCFC is currently seeking donors to fund more Black students in 2022. <em>PANL Perspectives<\/em> interviewed two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/2021\/2021-recipients-of-black-canadian-fundraisers-collective-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">past four award recipients<\/a>, as well as past donors and the BCFC to learn about the award\u2019s impact and <a href=\"https:\/\/futurefunder.carleton.ca\/campaigns\/mpnl-award-for-black-emerging-fundraising-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to donate to the award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Recipients<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5280 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chevalier_Therry_400x400px-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chevalier_Therry_400x400px-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chevalier_Therry_400x400px-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chevalier_Therry_400x400px.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Therry Chevalier<\/strong> works in Donor Engagement at Parkinson Canada. As a recipient, Chevalier says the award not only shaped his education, but instilled a new sense of responsibility as he works in the philanthropic sector. &#8220;It has given me the courage and responsibility to speak up knowing that Black fundraisers and thought-leaders have invested their time and resources in my success.&#8221; Chevalier says he believed he was a good candidate for the award because his professional and personal experience exposed him to different communities and their understanding of altruism. He maintains that the Black perspective is a key part of the donor stewardship process. Filling the gap in how it is understood broadly in Canadian fundraising is a chance for a different voice to be included in that process. &#8220;Every day, I think, &#8216;How am I able to repay the trust of the award&#8217;s funders?&#8217; I look to pay it forward through how I approach my professional and academic development. Through this award, you&#8217;re supporting the everyday work of championing diversity. It&#8217;s not just funding a career; it&#8217;s funding the future of philanthropy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5282 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Holly_Mohr_400x400px-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Holly_Mohr_400x400px-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Holly_Mohr_400x400px-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Holly_Mohr_400x400px.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Holly Mohr<\/strong> is a Senior Development Officer at the National Arts Centre who was impacted by both the award and the network of Black fundraisers that accompanied it. Mohr joined the network of Black fundraisers who she describes as \u201cvery engaged, super intelligent\u201d people who share job postings, offer peer-to-peer support and work alongside her. \u201cIf you\u2019re looking to make an actual meaningful difference in someone\u2019s life, this is a really good way to do that. There was an immediate return on their investment for me. Funds and scholarships are a great way to actually move the needle, but more than just the financial aspect, you\u2019re helping support networks, which is really important.\u201d Mohr says winning the award has also garnered recognition in her professional life. \u201cAs an early career Black woman, every little bit helps.\u201d Mohr encourages donors of all backgrounds to participate because, \u201cwe\u2019ve all come to understand and realize the value of having diverse voices at the table.\u201d She says it\u2019s no longer a question of \u2018how do we do it,\u2019 because this award presents a simple answer.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Donors<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5285 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Stephen-Hinds400x400-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Stephen-Hinds400x400-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Stephen-Hinds400x400-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Stephen-Hinds400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Stephen Hinds<\/strong>, National Director of Human Resources at Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP has been a lifelong donor and volunteer in the philanthropic sector. He says he doesn\u2019t have kids but has always wanted to help the next generation, and saw the <em>MPNL Award for Black Emerging Fundraising Professionals<\/em> as a perfect opportunity to give to the Black community. \u201cAs Black people, we need to support each other in educational pursuits. You don\u2019t need a lot of money. Even if it\u2019s time, let\u2019s just help each other out. Let\u2019s help elevate Black minds.\u201d Hinds encourages donors to use this opportunity\u00a0 to partner with an organization dedicated to investing in Black professionals who can help improve the sector. \u201cOur nonprofit sector needs good, dedicated people, and if you can help develop those good, dedicated people, go for it. Do it and try to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5288 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Henry-Rowling-400x400-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Henry-Rowling-400x400-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Henry-Rowling-400x400-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Henry-Rowling-400x400-2.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Henry Rowling<\/strong> is the Founder of Flying Cars, and is passionate about grassroots movements, such as Charity So White. He says he\u2019s been lucky enough to build a career using the privileges he has a white man, and was eager to donate when he learned about the award. \u201cWe need to get more Black fundraisers in charities so some of the power starts shifting, and this seemed like a straightforward way to do that.\u201d According to Rowling, the work doesn\u2019t end there. He says he will commit to alleviating inequities for the rest of his career through donations and promoting projects on his platforms. \u201cChanging the power dynamic in philanthropy are ongoing actions people need to take.\u201d Rowling says it\u2019s important to make the sector representative of the societies they serve, or there will be no shift in power. He takes it upon himself to share inclusive initiatives like this award with his various networks to \u201ctry and change some of the inequalities within the philanthropy and NGO space, which reflects systemic issues.\u201d Rowling says that donating to the <em>MPNL Award for Black Emerging Fundraising Professionals<\/em> is a \u201creal opportunity to change people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The BCFC<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nneka Allen, Founder of Black Canadian Fundraisers\u2019 Collective says that the future was the first thing the BCFC thought of when they came together to support each other and make measurable impacts as a group. \u201cWe wanted to impact their careers and offer support that would ensure success. We all agreed very easily that we felt the best way to do that would be an investment in education, specifically in our field of fundraising and in the nonprofit sector. We were making sure we had the capacity to support and invest at the highest levels of education that sometimes are a bit elusive to Black people and Black fundraisers.\u201d Allen says she wants to see greater racial justice for Black fundraisers. She says their contributions and excellence should be acknowledged through access, promotion and leadership. According to Allen, the sector only benefits from such acknowledgement. \u201cI think it&#8217;s imperative for us as a society and as a community to think about whose voices are missing in our organizations, and who is not represented amongst our teams.\u201d Allen says focusing on equity and creating equitable environments is not just an issue for Black people, but a human priority and imperative. \u201c<span style=\"color: #313131;\">Shouldn\u2019t our world be just?<\/span> Shouldn&#8217;t we all have the opportunity to begin from the same starting point?
