Congratulations to 2008 winners: Mary McGuire, associate professor, school of journalism and communication, who will use the monetary award to launch a professional development series for the school\u2019s faculty that will bring in professionals working in online journalism to talk about changing newsrooms and to share new skills and tools; and Joanna Pozzulo, associate professor, institute of criminology and criminal justice, who is building a first-year criminology course that will integrate law, psychology and sociology to introduce students to the study of criminology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_634\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 204px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-634\" title=\"Joanna\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/panorama\/wp-content\/uploads\/Joanna.jpg\" width=\"204\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panorama\/wp-content\/uploads\/Joanna.jpg 170w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panorama\/wp-content\/uploads\/Joanna-160x142.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joanna Pozzulo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Faculty of Public Affairs also celebrates the achievements of its faculty and staff at an annual reception highlighting new grants and funding, published papers and awards. A few highlights:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Mark Valcour, school of journalism and communication, received the Staff Award of Excellence for his devotion to students and his superb technical skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Research Excellence Award went to David Carment and Yiagadeesen Samy, both of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, to support their work on state fragility and failure through the Country Indicators for Foreign Policy initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Logan Atkinson, department of law, received a Teaching Excellence Award for his dedication to the whole student experience, both in and out of the classroom, especially his work in advising students.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Shaun Young, department of political science, received a Teaching Excellence Award for making second-year political theory exciting!
