Established in March 2011, the Carleton Initiative provided an orientation for Members of Parliament newly elected in the 2011 and 2015 general election and an orientation for newly arrived diplomats every year since 2011. 

Other events included panels followed by networking receptions on cybersecurity; the cost of energy; Canada-U.S. relations; affordable housing; a national food strategy; challenges facing Canada’s Arctic Council leadership; Canada’s future as an energy supplier; Canadian defence and security policy; Canada Arab relations; the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade (CETA) negotiations; and the Canadian election as well as an opportunity for diplomats to meet critics from the Official Opposition. In addition, the Carleton Initiative organized a special edition of Politics & The Pub featuring recent Carleton grads discussing public policy from theory to practice.

To date, more than 250 Members of Parliament have attended one or more events organized by the Carleton Initiative as have diplomats representing more than 100 countries, including more than 80 Ambassadors and High Commissioners.

Other guests have included political staffers, senior government officials, journalists, Carleton faculty, senior administration and students, and representatives of think tanks, civil society and others interested in public policy.
