Study on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in homes in the National Capital Region and surrounding area
We are looking for people to participate in a study looking at the levels of PFAS (also known as per- and polyflurooalkyl substances) on your hands and in your household dust, and whether levels are linked to social and economic factors.
Building materials, furnishings, and consumer products such as paints, cosmetics, and food containers can all release PFAS into the indoor environment. These chemicals can potentially have a negative impact on your health. Your participation in this study will help researchers at Carleton University and Health Canada better understand PFAS levels in homes around the Ottawa area.
We’re taking precautions to protect the health and safety of participants and staff. These precautions include:
- Wearing gloves and a mask
- Maintaining physical distance
- Limiting personal contacts and in-person interactions
- Undertaking enhanced cleaning protocols for the equipment
Activities involved in the study
We will:
- Collect dust from the main living area of your home with a vacuum cleaner (provided by the researchers)
You will:
- Not vacuum the main living area of your home for one week prior to sample collection
- Take a handwipe sample with a sterile gauze pad dipped in isopropyl alcohol (a main ingredient in hand sanitizer) as per instructions
- Fill out a questionnaire on housing characteristics, lifestyle and dietary habits, demographics, and social and economic factors
The benefits of participating
We will provide you with a personalized report including the results of the PFAS monitoring in your home and a $25 Sobeys gift card.
Requirements to participate
- Are at least 18 years old
- Have no intention of moving soon
- Can accommodate dust and handwipe sampling in your home for about 1-hour
- Are able to complete questionnaires in English
