The honour places her among an elite group of donors, partners and alumni whose philanthropy is helping to shape Carleton\u2019s story for generations to come. This achievement also carries an added significance as Elizabeth is the only current Carleton staff member to join the Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"ripley-core__text-item__paragraph__component\" data-foleon-id=\"3b476e39-f3d1-4bb9-9820-a413a5f03a33\">Elizabeth grew up in Ottawa and began her undergraduate degree in English in 1990 on the campus where she\u2019d one day become both a fulltime staff member and a dedicated donor. Today, Elizabeth is a Stewardship Specialist in Carleton\u2019s Department of University Advancement, where she helps with the creation of scholarships, bursaries and gift agreements. Her analytical mind keeps the details in order, but her heart is always in the stories\u2014both of donors who give and of students whose lives are changed as a result.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"ripley-core__text-item__paragraph__component\" data-foleon-id=\"3b476e39-f3d1-4bb9-9820-a413a5f03a33\"><strong>\u201cWhen you hear from a student who says a scholarship made it possible to stay in school, you realize this isn\u2019t just paperwork,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"ripley-core__text-item__paragraph__component\" data-foleon-id=\"3b476e39-f3d1-4bb9-9820-a413a5f03a33\">For Elizabeth and her husband Adam, philanthropy has long been part of both their professional and personal worlds. Throughout her career, Elizabeth has set up multiple scholarships and a bursary in honour of family members, including one for each of her parents and her uncle, as well as one for Adam\u2019s family. She is in the process of finalizing a fifth award as a memorial to her maternal grandparents that will benefit undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Nanoscience. \u201cMy parents didn\u2019t have much growing up,\u201d Elizabeth shares. \u201cMy dad always wanted to be a history teacher but couldn\u2019t for a variety of circumstances, and my mom had to drop out of high school, taking up correspondence classes later on and working her way up to a bookkeeping job. It meant a lot to create these awards for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-jdabBK ckNcEx\" data-testid=\"ripley-core__text-item__paragraph__component\" data-foleon-id=\"34fa14e9-0e85-4f37-9c64-9456695fc4b1\"><span class=\"sc-dOUtaJ cMXKvn\">That commitment to education runs deep for both Elizabeth and Adam. \u201cEducation is the key,\u201d Adam says. \u201cIt opens doors, it gives people choices and it allows them to live good lives. Supporting that feels right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-jdabBK ckNcEx\" data-testid=\"ripley-core__text-item__paragraph__component\" data-foleon-id=\"c5405248-9604-4fdb-b74b-e57df78be87b\"><span class=\"sc-dOUtaJ cMXKvn\">\u201cIt\u2019s about the future,\u201d Elizabeth adds. \u201cIt\u2019s about promoting education and what you can do with it moving forward. The bursary I set up in my mother\u2019s name supports industrial design students.
