It’s that time of year again with finals approaching!

Here are some study strategies to help you as your prepare for your exams.

Use Active Study Strategies

Research shows that active study strategies like practice questions, flashcards or self-testing are more effective than passive study strategies (like re-reading your notes). Active testing and practical application improve learning!

Try Dual-Coding

Combine words and visuals to the information you are trying to learning.

Create an infographic, cartoon strip, diagram or mind map!

Space Out Your Studying

Spacing out your study sessions over several days can lead to greater long-term retention.

Consider trying (free) apps like Study Bunny to plan and manage your study time.

Be the Teacher

Try teaching a friend about the topic. This allows you to evaluate your own knowledge and identify areas that require improvement or additional study-time.

Find an Environment that Works for You

Try studying in an environment that is associated with learning! Ditch your bed and head to the library. Make sure you have all the materials you’ll need, including water and snacks if necessary.

When to Use Different Study Strategies

Rewriting Notes

  • To summarize key concepts or material from the class.
  • Do not use this as your only study strategy!

Mind Maps or Concept Mapping

  • To get the big picture.
  • To summarize when reading.

Flashcards

  • To learn the details.
  • For definitions, formulas or theory basics.

Highlighting or Colour-Coding

  • To identify important concepts.
  • To differentiate between topics.

Self-Testing

  • To ensure you know the material well enough to be tested on it.
