The biggest difference is that it is incumbent on you, as the student, to self-advocate and ask for the support(s) that you need. Post-secondary education requires you to engage in self-directed learning, manage increased academic\n                                                    &#8230;\n                                            <\/p>\n                            <\/div>\n        \n                    <footer class=\"px-6 pt-3 mt-auto text-white md:pt-5\">\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/pmc\/current-students\/classroom-accommodations\/\" class=\"cu-button cu-button--red cu-button--small\">\n                    View Page\n                <\/a>\n            <\/footer>\n            <\/div>\n\n\n        <\/div>\n\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"understanding-accommodations-in-university\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding Accommodations in University<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-is-an-appropriate-accommodation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an \u201cappropriate\u201d accommodation? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An appropriate academic accommodation in university is a modification or adjustment that will result in an equal opportunity for a student with a disability to attain the same level of performance, or enjoy the same level of benefits and privileges experienced by others, without compromising bona fide academic requirements and standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-are-my-template-accommodations-determined\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are my template accommodations determined?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Template accommodations are based on your functional impairments and determined during your intake appointment with your PMC Coordinator. These template accommodations are intended to address the anticipated impact your functional impairments will have on your academic studies. Template accommodations can include adjustments that you require for writing tests\/exams or participating in your classes or labs. The accommodation process is dynamic. Your accommodations can be adjusted at any time if there is a change in your disability status or if you have a new disability diagnosis. This is done in consultation with your PMC Coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"who-is-responsible-for-the-implementation-of-academic-accommodations-at-carleton\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is responsible for the implementation of academic accommodations at Carleton?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the Carleton University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/secretariat\/policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Academic Accommodation Policy for Students with Disabilities<\/a>, the responsibility for implementation of accommodations is shared by the key stakeholders in the accommodation process: the students themselves, the Paul Menton Centre (PMC),&nbsp; course instructors, and Scheduling and Examination Services (SES).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up to date versions of Carleton policy documents can be found via the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/secretariat\/policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University Secretariat&#8217;s University Policies webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-are-my-responsibilities-in-the-accommodation-process\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are my responsibilities in the accommodation process?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a registered student with the PMC, it is your responsibility to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Request accommodations in Ventus at the beginning of every term.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow up with your Instructors and Teaching Assistants to discuss how your accommodations are to be implemented at the beginning of every term.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manage your exam accommodations in Ventus from the time you receive a request to confirm participation for a test to the time you write it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do not wish to receive accommodations for a test or exam, please cancel your accommodations when confirming your participation or attendance for the test or exam in Ventus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your PMC Coordinator informed of any changes related to your disability and\/or courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report any problems or discrepancies with your accommodations immediately to your PMC Coordinator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you can request academic accommodations through the Ventus Student Portal you must have already completed the intake and registration process with the Paul Menton Centre. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/pmc\/registering-with-pmc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Registration information is available on our Registering with PMC webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"more-information\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Information&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More information about using Ventus to request your accommodations is available in our <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/pmc\/faq-requesting-academic-accommodations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Requesting Accommodations FAQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Accessing accommodations in a postsecondary setting often looks quite different than it did to have an IEP (or similar) in high school, or other venues.
