Thank you and congratulations to Elinor Sloan, Chair of the Department of Political Science. Elinor has been Chair of the Department since 2018. Navigating one of the most challenging years in Carleton’s history, she has worked incredibly hard to continue to increase our reputation and build our significant achievements. She completes her tenure as Chair this month and becomes the Clerk of Carleton’s Senate in July.

In her nearly 20-year tenure at the university, Elinor has planted deep roots within the campus community and proven herself to be an essential part of Carleton’s governance.

“I think my favourite thing about the university is its collegial, community environment”

She credits her successes to small, meaningful, daily actions – a piece of advice she would like to pass-on to students. “Don’t spend too much time mapping out exactly where you are going in life. Follow your interests, and work hard every day, and doors will start to open.”

Elinor will continue to teach political science courses, supervise graduate student research, and conduct her own research. She has two projects underway, a book manuscript on Canada’s international security policy, and a SSHRC funded (2020-2026) research project on the naval shipbuilding strategies of Canada and its close allies.
