Despite longstanding commitments to political equality, progress in Canada has been slow. Women have been elected to governments in increasing numbers, but they remain numerically under-represented, and even once in office, many report experiences of hostility and abuse. The representational gap is even larger for non-binary and gender-diverse individuals, as well as those with intersecting identities. The political careers of Black and Indigenous women trailblazers have been indelibly marked by discrimination, which has sometimes come from within political institutions and their own parties. These experiences shape who comes forward for elected office and, by extension, the role models that young Canadians see when they look at our institutions. This panel will feature new research on gendered political socialization, which shows that as they get older, girls increasingly view politics as a “man’s world.” Our conversation will focus on what can be done to change these perceptions and how we can work together to break the biases and create political institutions that are more equitable and inclusive.
