Comparative Politics explores similarities and differences in the institutions, political cultures, and political economies of states and equips students with tools to understand how citizens relate to their governments in different political contexts. Students can explore and debate such topics as democracy and authoritarianism, elections, political communications, populism, gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality, and political representation from the perspective of countries in the Global North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their second year of the program, students in this concentration earn 1.0 credit in the following two courses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 2101 [0.5 credit]: Comparative Politics of the Global North<br>\nDomestic politics in states of the Global North. Comparison of political and economic regimes, political institutions, actors, political processes and cultures, and patterns of public policy making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 2102 [0.5 credit]: Comparative Politics of the Global South<br>\nIntroduction to domestic politics in post-colonial and developing states of the Global South. Topics may include nationalism, authoritarianism, economic development, revolution, democratization, and the politics of gender, religion, and ethnicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their third and fourth years of the program, students take an additional 2.5 credits in Comparative Politics, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 3200 \u2013 U.S. Constitutional Politics<br>\nPSCI 3207 \u2013 The Government and Politics of European Integration<br>\nPSCI 3405 \u2013 Comparative Public Policy Analysis<br>\nPSCI 3406 \u2013 Public Affairs and Media Strategies<br>\nPSCI 3801 \u2013 Environmental Politics<br>\nPSCI 3805 \u2013 Politics of Race<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 4103 \u2013 The Modern State<br>\nPSCI 4204 \u2013 Elections<br>\nPSCI 4209 \u2013 Westminster Democracies: Parliaments, Parties and Elections<br>\nPSCI 4505 \u2013 Transitions to Democracy<br>\nPSCI 4506 \u2013 Women and Politics in North America<br>\nPSCI 4606 \u2013 American Foreign Policy<br>\nPSCI 4608 \u2013 European Integration and European Security<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the full list of course options in Comparative Politics (Global North), and the specific degree requirements for your program, consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/undergrad\/undergradprograms\/politicalscience\/#Concentration_in_Comparative_Politics_and_Area_Studies_Global_North\">Undergraduate Calendar<\/a>.
