Students investigate the political, social, economic, and cultural processes that define the North American region, the similarities and differences between the three countries, and how they relate to each other. The courses in this concentration introduce students to Indigenous peoples and politics in North America; debates about trade, the environment, defence and border control; comparative public policies and other vital issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their second year of the program, students in this concentration earn 0.5 credit in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 2200 [0.5 credit]: Introduction to U.S. Politics<br>\nAn examination of several important aspects of the U.S. political system, including separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And 0.5 credit in one of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 2002 [0.5 credit]: Canadian Politics and Civil Society<br>\nAn examination of the cultural, social, and economic context of Canadian politics, including interest groups and social movements, regionalism, language, ethnicity, and gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 2003 [0.5 credit]: Canadian Political Institutions<br>\nAn examination of Canadian political institutions, including federalism, Parliament, the constitution, political parties and the electoral system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, in their third and fourth year of their program, students are required to earn 0.5 credit in each of US Politics, Canadian Politics, and Mexican or Latin American Politics, and 1.0 credit in North American Politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses in US Politics may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 3108 \u2013 Politics of Popular Culture<br>\nPSCI 3200 \u2013 U.S. Constitutional Politics<br>\nPSCI 3210 \u2013 Electoral Politics in the U.S.<br>\nPSCI 4606 \u2013 American Foreign Policy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses in Canadian Politics may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 3000 \u2013 Canadian Provincial Politics<br>\nPSCI 3004 \u2013 Political Parties and Elections in Canada<br>\nPSCI 3402 \u2013 Canadian Public Policy<br>\nPSCI 4006 \u2013 Legislatures and Representation in Canada<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses in Mexican or Latin American Politics may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 3205 \u2013 Mexican Politics<br>\nPSCI 3204 \u2013 Politics of Latin America<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses in North American Politics may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSCI 3607 \u2013 North American Security and Defence Policy<br>\nPSCI 4206 \u2013 Indigenous Politics of North America<br>\nPSCI 4403 \u2013 Reproductive Rights Policy in North America<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the full list of course options in North American Politics, and the specific degree requirements for your program, consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/undergrad\/undergradprograms\/politicalscience\/#Concentration_in_North_American_Politics\">Undergraduate Calendar<\/a>.
