From Jobs with Inequality to a Just Transition: <\/strong>How Canada Can Tackle Inequality and Climate Change while Charting a Path to Low-Carbon, Equitable Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Canada, economic inequality is continuing to grow. Currently, Canada has the second highest level of top income inequality in the OECD; and the third highest level of workers in low-wage employment. At the same time, Canada is falling far short from meeting of any of its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, if Canada were to actually meet its stated targets for 2050, we would require annual emissions reductions more than four or five times more ambitious than are now on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can Canadians take action now to fight against growing inequality while also reducing our global emissions? What kind of bold plans are needed to build renewable energy and green economy but that can also reverse inequality and create good, high-paying jobs? Who can help lead a just and ambitious pathway to a clean energy economy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this public lecture, Dr. John Peters will provide insight into these issues. Drawing on research from his two forthcoming books Jobs with Inequality<\/em> (University of Toronto Press, 2022) and Canadian Labour Policy and Politics: Inequality and Its Alternatives<\/em> (University of British Columbia Press, 2022 co-edited with Don Wells), he argues that progressive Just Transition and Green New Deal agendas are key to taking steps that will not only reduce emissions but also create new jobs that will benefit workers and communities across Canada<\/p>\n\n\n
