Unfortunately, COVID restriction put our plans for an event to celebrate his legacy on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"151\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo-240x151.png\" alt=\"Waffle\" class=\"wp-image-6105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo-240x151.png 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo-400x252.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo-160x101.png 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo-768x483.png 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo-360x226.png 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo-200x126.png 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/politicaleconomy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/leo.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, December 10th, 2022, we were finally able to gather together and organize a<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&nbsp;sy<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">mposi<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">um, which assessed the legacy of Panitch&#8217;s scholarship, education, and activism, featured roundtables throughout the day (see list below) and a keynote address by IPE Visiting Professor Stephen Maher.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work of Leo p<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">anitch left an immense impact on the field of political economy \u2013 from his critique of social democracy to his groundbreaking theorization, with Sam Gindin, of globalization and the American empire. As a professor at Carleton, he helped to place the University at the forefront of the study of political economy in Canada, and played a key role in the creation of the Institute of Political Economy. At the same time, he was deeply involved in politics, including the Waffle, the Ottawa Committee for Labour Action, and the Socialist Project.
