\n Riddell Mentorship Program\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

If you are interested in serving as a mentor for future MPM cohorts, please complete the form below<\/em>. We ask our mentors to be available to meet with our students for one hour a month. Mentorship matches happen in the fall term. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Riddell Mentorship Program provides one-on-one support for MPM students during their time in the program and as they transition into the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ideally, mentors will be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Program fellows or alumni of the program,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Working in the field of political management, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Willing to commit about one hour a month to meeting with a student.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The mentor provides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Moral support \u2013 listening, identifying problems, and encouraging the student,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Career support \u2013 helping the student set goals, choose a career path, and assess their strengths and weaknesses,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Expertise in the field \u2013 helping the student advance their knowledge and skills, and serves as a<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Role model \u2013 sharing experiences, achievements and failures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Students need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Communicate their needs to the mentor,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Understand the mentor\u2019s expectations,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Show respect for the mentor\u2019s time, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Take the mentoring relationship seriously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        The Relationship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Both mentor and student should meet regularly, ideally about once a month. In-person meetings are recommended, but might not be possible given work\/school demands or geographic distance (if a student is matched with a mentor outside of Ottawa). Regular conversations by video call, telephone or email can help to keep the conversation going. Both parties must commit to maintaining the confidentiality of the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Matching<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        The mentorship program coordinator will interview incoming students individually with the aim of pairing them with compatible mentors. Considerations will include interests, goals, experiences, partisan affiliation, personality traits, and other factors that may affect the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
