Let me first welcome all our new students to the Carleton community! You are joining us at an unusual time, but you can be sure our community is rallying to make you feel at home and help get you off to a strong start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First off, in partnership with CUSA and other student associations, we have prepared an amazing virtual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fallorientation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fall Orientation<\/a>&nbsp;starting on Sept. 6, 2020.&nbsp;Over 400 student volunteers will help welcome our new Ravens to the Carleton community. Some highlights of the week include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A number of ice breakers and speed mingling activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virtual games, including a variation of <em>Epic Bingo<\/em> and <em>The Price is Right<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nicholas Wallace, <em>America\u2019s Got Talent<\/em> illusionist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bob Ross at Home Paint Night<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once Upon a Time at Poetry Land with <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2019\/meet-our-new-artist-in-residence-jamaal-jackson-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Just Jamaal<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pop-up drive-in movies on campus, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Arkells Study Break<\/em>, an online interactive storytelling and song request experience with members of six-time Juno Award winners, the Arkells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our professors and course instructors are ready to offer high-quality online courses and programs, and I invite you to learn more about our <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-instructors-making-the-most-of-shift-to-online-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teaching and learning efforts<\/a> and how we engaged <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/students-as-partners-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">students as partners in designing exciting courses<\/a>! Our <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/co-op\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">co-op program<\/a> \u2013 one of the largest in Ontario \u2013 has quickly adapted to COVID-19 and over 600 students have already confirmed placements for the fall term. We are well prepared because &#8211; like most Canadian universities and <a href=\"https:\/\/insidehighered.com\/news\/2020\/08\/12\/colleges-walk-back-fall-reopening-plans-and-opt-online-only-instruction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unlike many American ones who now find themselves in a difficult situation<\/a> &#8211; we started to plan for an online fall term several months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On campus, research activities have resumed and our <a href=\"https:\/\/library.carleton.ca\/feature\/we\u2019re-now-ready-limited-reopening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MacOdrum Library has partially reopened<\/a> as a study space for a maximum of 50 students, faculty and staff at a time. It goes without saying that physical distancing and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ehs\/wp-content\/uploads\/COVID-19-Mask-policy_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">masks<\/a> are required. While library stacks are still closed, the print collection is available through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/library.carleton.ca\/services\/curbside-pick-and-mail-delivery-library-print-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">curbside pickup and mailing<\/a>,&nbsp;and digitally via the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/library.carleton.ca\/find\/databases\/hathitrust-digital-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HathiTrust Digital Library<\/a> service. In the same vein, recreational and athletic facilities and programs are also moving toward a <a href=\"https:\/\/athletics.carleton.ca\/2020\/update-carleton-athletics-programs-cancelled-and-facilities-closed-until-july-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phased reopening<\/a>, with the Fitness Centre scheduled to open its doors with limited capacity on Sept. 8 and a hybrid model of virtual and in-person fitness classes planned for fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, we must postpone our fall Convocation ceremonies to a later time, but we look forward to the day when we can all celebrate the 6000+ members of the class of 2020 in person. In the meantime, we will virtually celebrate our graduates in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our annual <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.carleton.ca\/throwback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Throwback<\/a>, which usually brings about 10,000 alumni back to campus, will also be virtual this year. It starts on Sept. 26 and will include the official launch of our recently approved <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-approves-strategic-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strategic Integrated Plan<\/a> on Sept. 28. As we celebrate our shared past and all our successes over the past 78 years, we also look forward to our future with renewed resilience, ambition and optimism. I continue to be fully confident that our Carleton community will get through the current public health crisis and come out the other side stronger, more inclusive, and more united than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planning ahead remains the key to our successful adaptation to these unusual circumstances and, as we head into the fall, we are already preparing for the winter. Following the key principles outlined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/Scenario-Planning-Report-200511-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton University Scenario Planning (CUSP)<\/a> working group, we will continue to place the health and well-being of students, staff, faculty and the broader community above all other considerations. Following discussion at <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/senate\/2020\/inside-senate-aug-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a recent special meeting of Senate<\/a>, CUSP has finalized its <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/Recommendation-Winter-2021-200827-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommendation that the winter semester proceed online, with some leeway for selected optional instruction on campus<\/a> (e.g. specific labs, capstone projects, recitals) if circumstances allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, any questions you may have that are not answered by <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/coronavirus-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton\u2019s COVID-19 information website<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/coronavirus-covid-19\/faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FAQ section<\/a> should be forwarded to <a href=\"mailto:covidinfo@carleton.ca\">covidinfo@carleton.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be strange not to welcome 35,000 people to our beautiful campus this fall, but it does not have to be sad. Our community is strong and <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/new-academic-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there is a lot on the go as we usher in the new academic year<\/a>.
