About the Position:

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise and research potential in Advanced Air Mobility systems and enabling technologies (such as avionics, electric aircraft, autonomous flight systems, drones, quadrotors, advanced fly-by­wire/wireless/optics and urban air traffic control and safety). Candidates should also have an interest to lead collaborations with colleagues both within the department and with other units in the Faculty.

The candidate’s research interests are expected to align with one of our many areas of Aerospace Engineering strength, including uninhabited aircraft systems (UAS) and conventional aircraft. The research should be applicable to the development and/ or utilization of advanced air mobility platforms and systems (including commercial and military aircraft, UAS/UAVs, drones, quadrotors, urban air mobility, eVTOL aircraft and other emerging aircraft systems) and may extend to ground or marine vehicles. The candidate should have the vision and capabilities to lead interdisciplinary, multi-institution, and industrially-supported research projects in one or more of these areas. Candidates seeking a balanced academic career involving significant research, supervision and training of a research team of graduate and undergraduate students, and innovative teaching in undergraduate engineering programs are ideal. We seek candidates that have a desire to encourage young people, and especially women and under-represented groups, to pursue a technical, engineering career.

The Department offers degrees in Mechanical, Aerospace, Biomedical and Mechanical, and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are a research-intensive department with over 300 graduate students at the Masters and PhD levels.

Our substantial strength in UASs and advanced aircraft stems from a long history as the oldest Aerospace program in Canada, as well as robotics and controls strengths from in our Mechanical engineering program. Complemented by significant expertise in the Departments of Electronics and of Systems and Computer Engineering, we are positioned to lead the future of autonomous systems in the air, in space, on land and at sea. This drives the ongoing effort by the department to create focused activity in autonomous systems, aerospace robotics, and in advanced air mobility in particular.

The successful candidate is required to have a Ph.D. in engineering, an excellent track record of high-quality research output that demonstrates potential for independent research, and a demonstrated aptitude for teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate must demonstrate the potential to develop research collaborations with industry, become a graduate-student supervisor, and attract funding to support independent research programs yielding high quality peer reviewed publications. Membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is necessary at the time of appointment or within five years of appointment.
