Retirement Reception: Jim Kennelly
March 5, 2020 at 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
|Location:||2017 Dunton Tower|
Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Jerry Tomberlin is hosting a reception on Thursday, March 5, 2020 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in Dunton Tower 2017 in celebration of Jim Kennelly’s 45-year career at Carleton.
Jim is a Carleton graduate (BA/75) and has been dedicated to Carleton student life for many years. Jim has worked as Carleton’s Ombudsperson for the last 42 years. In this role, he oversees approximately 850 cases per year and uses his extensive training in dispute resolution and knowledge of legislation and case law to mediate a variety of issues including academic disputes, legal aid, consumer protection and employee issues.
Funded by both Carleton University and the Carleton University Students’ Association, Ombuds Services is a confidential and independent service that looks into matters when members of the university community do not believe they have been treated fairly.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1975, Jim worked as a Co-ordinator of Student Services for three years at Carleton in what was known at the time as St. Patrick’s College. He then became the University’s first Ombudsperson in 1978, a role that he has since expanded into a team that now serves Carleton’s more than 31,000 students.
During this time, Jim also served as a member of the Review Tribunal for CPP Disability and Old Age Security and as a facilitator of public policy for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. Prior to this, Jim served as Chairperson for the Ottawa Separate School Board (now called the Ottawa Catholic School Board) and was involved as a municipally elected trustee for several years.
Please join us in wishing Jim well as he moves into his retirement! All members of the Carleton community are welcome to attend.
