id=\"what-is-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experiential learning is the application of theory and academic content to real-world experiences within the classroom, the community or the workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may be undertaken independently or in teams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It advances learning outcomes and encourages reflection and application of skills and knowledge in contexts that prepare students for the workplace and civil society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"why-is-it-important\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is it important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research shows that experiential learning contributes to student engagement, deeper learning, improved academic outcomes and enhanced work and life skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In September 2017, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD) issued its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/A04-EL-Guiding-Priciples-FINAL-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guiding Principles for Experiential Learning (EL)<\/a>\u201d indicating their commitment to \u201censuring that every student has at least one EL activity by the time they graduate from a publicly funded postsecondary
