{"id":26201,"date":"2021-12-17T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T15:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/?p=26201"},"modified":"2025-04-08T10:59:46","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T14:59:46","slug":"community-led-conversations-continuing-for-new-names-for-new-times-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/2021\/community-led-conversations-continuing-for-new-names-for-new-times-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Community-Led Conversations Continuing for New Names for New Times Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Community-Led Conversations Continuing for New Names for New Times Initiative\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton is continuing to make progress on the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/new-names\">New Names for New Times<\/a> initiative, which will result in three campus buildings being renamed to reflect the university\u2019s diversity and commitment to inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the initiative was announced by President Benoit-Antoine Bacon earlier this year, the committee co-chairs have been engaging current partners and stakeholders to ensure the three processes will be driven by the appropriate communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe recognize that it is essential for these conversations to be thoughtful, comprehensive and community-led,\u201d said Carleton Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Jerry Tomberlin. \u201cWe are taking care not to rush these processes, but to take the necessary time to seek guidance through discussion with relevant communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Vice-President (Indigenous Initiatives) Kahente Horn-Miller and Centre for Indigenous Initiatives Director Benny Michaud have engaged an Algonquin Advisory Council to guide the naming of University Centre and an Inuit Advisory Council to guide the naming of Robertson Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interim Assistant Vice-President (Equity and Inclusive Communities) Ikram Jama and Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs Dean Patrice Smith co-chair an <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/new-names\/residence-commons\">Advisory Council that will guide the naming of Residence Commons<\/a>. Members have met several times this year to define a consultation process that will be implemented in two phases.
