To bring this study full circle she will also analyze games from Nintendo\u2019s newest gaming console, the Nintendo Switch, to track diverse representation on this newer system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, there has been increased pressure to include more diverse representation regarding gender and race in video games,\u201d said Nance. \u201cMy goal is to gain a better understanding of current representation on the Nintendo Wii and its historical development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nance will be working with Sioabhan Angus, Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Studies. \u201cShadea is a brilliant and dedicated emerging media studies scholar doing innovative research with significant real world-implications,\u201d said Angus. \u201cShe has done incredible work at Carleton to lead conversations around equity and inclusion and her project will make a significant contribution to game studies through its intersectional focus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is imperative to understand the dominant content consumed by any generation during their formative years, especially content that asks users to identify with it\u201d said Nance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"olivia-little-she-her\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Olivia Little (she\/her)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"398\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Olivia-Little-cropped-1-1-400x398.jpg\" alt=\"Olivia Little - Smiling w\nomen with red long hair and black top. \" class=\"wp-image-28721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Olivia-Little-cropped-1-1-400x398.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Olivia-Little-cropped-1-1-200x199.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Olivia-Little-cropped-1-1.jpg 492w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivia Little is a fourth-year Bachelor of Sociology (Honours) student with a minor in Film Studies. She will be researching the barriers to education that students with ADHD face at University, with a focus on the impacts of the pandemic on their learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was inspired to pursue this project because of my own experiences as a student with ADHD,\u201d said Little.&nbsp; \u201cOver my years of university, I\u2019ve noticed that the way many courses are designed can make it difficult for me to get a lot out of them, and I\u2019ve often found myself imagining how I could have designed the course to better meet my needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Little will be working with Tonya Davidson, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, to produce learning guides that will be used to inform the instructional design of courses across several faculties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Olivia is very passionate about nourishing learning environments that are accessible and welcoming,\u201d said Davidson. \u201cHer many years as a peer-assisted study session facilitator have well-equipped her to undergo this important research.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through her work, Little hopes to reshape the way the university functions, making it a more enriching and inclusive experience for all students, regardless of ability. \u201cThis project is so exciting to me because I see it as an opportunity for students with ADHD to have more agency regarding their education,\u201d said Little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"aanya-baindur-she-her\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aanya Baindur (she\/her)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Aanya-Baindur-cropped-2-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"Black shoulder length hair,smiling and standing in front of a red backdrop wearing a black top and a neon green lanyard. \n\" class=\"wp-image-28708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Aanya-Baindur-cropped-2-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Aanya-Baindur-cropped-2-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Aanya-Baindur-cropped-2-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Aanya-Baindur-cropped-2.jpg 955w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aanya Baindur is a second year Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) student with a concentration in Marketing whose research will identify and provide solutions to barriers to success, discriminatory practices, and systemic problems experienced by 2SLGBTQ+ students at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis study will bring to the forefront problems faced by Carleton\u2019s 2SLGBTQ+ community and in doing so provide a voice to a community that so often in society isn\u2019t afforded one,\u201d said Baindur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with Rick Colbourne, Sprott Associate Dean of Equity &amp; Inclusive Communities and Associate Professor of Indigenous Leadership &amp; Management, Baindur\u2019s project will help inform changes to classroom pedagogy to better support 2SLGBTQ+ students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am thrilled to be working with Aanya on this important project,\u201d said Colburne. \u201cShe is a passionate and committed member of the Sprott and Carleton University community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a trans women of colour, this project is important to me,\u201d said Baindur. \u201cI would like to give the 2SLGBTQ+ community at Carleton the opportunity to voice their concerns and help eliminate any barriers to success experienced by them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"cosette-arseneault-deraps-she-her\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cosette Arseneault-Deraps (she\/her)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Cosette-Arseneault-Deraps-cropped-400x400.jpeg\" alt=\"Standing outside with a forest behind her. Her research will look to discover to what extent Indigenous knowledge and consent are included in fisheries research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI realized there was room to combine my areas of study with my passion to create a research project that will be a starting point for future research in my academic career,\u201d said Arseneault-Deraps in regards to the project\u2019s origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arseneault-Deraps is working alongside Prof. Sheryl Ann Simpson, assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, to determine whether there are protocols or general knowledge among researchers on how to respectfully ask for consent and participation from Indigenous groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited to learn from Cosette&#8217;s research,&#8221; said Simpson. &#8220;She&#8217;s doing the hard work of caring for Indigenous self-determination and thriving by asking how non-Indigenous systems and practices around environment studies need to change.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hope to begin a conversation about implementing standards of practice throughout natural science research on including Indigenous voices,\u201d said Arseneault-Deraps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"pallavi-sodhi-she-her\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pallavi Sodhi (she\/her)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Pallavi-Sodhi-cropped-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"Standing at the bottom of stairs, with black, long hair, hoop earrings, a black blazer and white blouse. \n\" class=\"wp-image-28714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Pallavi-Sodhi-cropped-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Pallavi-Sodhi-cropped-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/Pallavi-Sodhi-cropped.jpg 753w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pallavi Sodhi is a first year master&#8217;s student in the Human-Computer Interaction program. Through her research, Sodhi will be exploring accessibility in video games; understanding what accessibility features are available, how they are designed, and what their benefits and limitations are from the perspective of those who create and play them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe importance of accessibility in games cannot be overstated since it allows games to be inclusive to everyone,\u201d she said. \u201cIt should be possible for all individuals to enjoy and fully participate in the gaming experience, regardless of their abilities or disabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with both Dr. Audrey Girouard, Associate Dean in the Faculty of Engineering &amp; Design, and Associate Professor in the School of Information Technology, and Dr. David Thue, Assistant Professor in the School of Information Technology, Sodhi\u2019s research will aid in developing an accessibility-focused framework for game designers that will enable them to create new customizable accessibility features for players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We see Pallavi&#8217;s project as a key step toward making video games more accessible to a wider range of players,\u201d said Thue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Carleton has awarded students funding to support summer research projects related to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
