I do this work because I love to teach and I want to create spaces where Indigenous students are seen, supported and successful\u2014so they can bring that strength and knowledge back to their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Benny Michaud was recognized by the M\u00e9tis Nation for their work as an educator and advocate for Two-Spirit M\u00e9tis people across the Homeland and for their commitment to the revitalization of the Michif language. Michaud is a proud Michif tasta-iiyinew (person in between) from St. Boniface, Manitoba and is a founding member of Mahwiiyahk Nakatakashoo, the National M\u00e9tis Two-Spirit Circle. They are currently working towards a PhD in Canadian Studies which will focus on the self-actualization of Michif Tastawiiyinawak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2025\/04\/Benny-400x532-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2025\/04\/Benny-400x532-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2025\/04\/Benny-400x532-1-320x426.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Benny Michaud, Director of the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As Director of the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement, Michaud leads efforts to advance the 41 calls to action outlined in Carleton\u2019s Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin Report, fostering opportunities for education and dialogue within the university community. This summer, Michaud will be teaching a land-based learning course entitled \u201cTwo-Spirit\/Indigiqueer Worldviews and Relationships with the Land\u201d\u2014the first time such a course has been offered at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere is no greater form of recognition than that which comes from your own community,\u201d said Michaud. \u201cAs a survivor of conversion therapy, the life I currently lead is one I never imagined possible. I\u2019ve dedicated my life to reclaiming and sharing Two-Spirit M\u00e9tis teachings, traditions and ceremonial practices and I\u2019m forever humbled by the work of those Two-Spirit ancestors and elders that have, and continue to, create a path forward for myself and others. I will keep listening and learning from Two-Spirit relatives across the M\u00e9tis homeland and sharing those teachings with Two-Spirit students at Carleton.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The King Charles III Coronation Medal honours the long-standing Commonwealth tradition of recognizing citizens who have demonstrated exceptional service and leadership during times of national significance.
