The Department of Psychology in partnership with MeWeRTH, will co-host Psychology Mental Health Day on Thurs. Oct. 5th from 1:30-4:00pm. MeWeRTH has established the ‘Courage



to Speak Award’ to recognize the bravery and inspiration of our speakers to share their journey. This year, MeWeRTH presents



the Courage to Speak Award to Linda Hunter who will be speaking at the event. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Tim Salomons from Queen’s University.

Title: Of Fish and Fetuses: Why our definition of pain matters



Abstract: Any of us can recognize pain when we feel it, but defining it is more difficult. Pain is often a response to injury, but can also occur in the absence of any apparent damage to the body. It can be a simple, reflexive response, but can also be a complex social and emotional experience. In this talk, I will examine how the way we define and conceptualize pain has important clinical, ethical, and political ramifications, and how psychological and neurobiological research has been used (and misused) to shape debate in these domains.
