I am particularly interested in groups whose experiences are often overlooked, and my research has examined students and young adults with disabilities and chronic illness, older workers, working mothers, and employees in demanding occupations such as policing. Across these groups, I am interested in what helps people feel supported and able to speak up, and how their experiences carry into their lives more broadly, including family relationships and parenting. Leadership is woven through this work. Leaders play a central role in creating organizations where people feel supported, and I am interested both in how leaders affect the well-being of those around them and in how the role affects leaders’ own psychological health. I look at both sides of people’s experiences with organizations: what can get in the way, such as incivility and exclusion, and what helps people thrive, such as support, mentorship, and having a voice. My lab uses a range of methods, including multi-wave surveys, dyadic studies with families, experiments, and qualitative interviews. Students in my lab are involved in all stages of the research process, from study design and data collection to analysis and writing, and work on questions with direct implications for how organizations can better support the people within them.

Sample Publications

Dionisi, A.
