After completing a B.A. (Honours) in Health Psychology with a Minor in Neuroscience & Mental Health in 2020, Jasmin went on to earn an M.A<\/strong>. in Psychology in 2025. She now works as a Research Coordinator<\/strong> at the Bruy\u00e8re Health Research Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

“Graduating from your psychology program is an exciting milestone, but it is also completely normal to feel uncertain about what comes next. My advice is to seek out new experiences and explore different opportunities. Take the time to discover what genuinely interests and motivates you. Your career will likely evolve rather than follow a single, linear path. Approach your next steps as a process of learning and growth, rather than feeling like you need to have everything figured out.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Brief description of what I do!<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since graduating from my MA in Psychology program at Carleton, I have been working as a Research Coordinator<\/strong> at the Bruy\u00e8re Health Research Institute<\/a>. In my role, I support clinical trials investigating potential disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer\u2019s disease. My work is diverse, encompassing everything from ensuring that the trials are conducted in compliance with ethical and regulatory standards to liaising with sponsors and the study team and administering assessments that track changes over the course of a trial. Throughout this process, I work closely with participants and their families to support them at every stage of their research journey. I find the work rewarding, as it has the potential to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer\u2019s disease while advancing new treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What inspired your career path after graduation?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As part of my co-operative education program, I had the opportunity to work in both community and government settings on programs that were really the result of how research findings can be mobilized. Through these experiences, I saw firsthand how neurological and mental health conditions can affect functioning, independence, and quality of life. Witnessing this inspired my interest in understanding the role of cognition on daily functioning and recovery, while also developing my passion for translational research that can have a meaningful, real-world impact<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did your experience in the psychology program shape your journey?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The psychology program offers a well-rounded, solid foundation of psychology. I also had the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained through various co-operative placements and research projects. These experiences led me to secure a research position at The Royal\u2019s Institute of Mental Health Research, working primarily with individuals living with psychosis. I enjoyed the program so much that I decided to complete my MA in Psychology at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What skills or experiences were most valuable after graduation?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The skills and experiences I gained from the psychology program were key in opening doors throughout my career. The critical thinking skills I developed, including evaluating the evidence, developing processes, and data analysis, have been instrumental. The program also gave me a deeper understanding of human behaviour that I draw on every day. Being able to tailor communication to different audiences and approach my work with empathy has just been as important as my technical research training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have a favourite memory from your program at Carleton? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The third-year statistics course with Dr. Deanna Whelan<\/a> stood out to me. Dr. Whelan taught statistics in a way that made it digestible and translated the theoretical concepts into concrete applications that were easy to understand. It was this course that gave me the skills required for my first co-operative education placement with the Government of Canada, where I continued afterwards as a FSWEP student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has been a highlight or proud moment in your career so far?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I am always proud of my work completed at The Royal\u2019s Institute of Mental Health Research. In one study, I collaborated with clinicians and individuals with lived experience of psychosis to co-develop a virtual reality cognitive rehabilitation program. My work on this study eventually became my first lead-author publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was also fortunate to deliver this program to individuals living with psychosis as part of the subsequent clinical trial. Drawing on my psychology background, I supported participants as they engaged with the training and applied the cognitive strategies to their goals and daily life functioning.
