What's the difference between Psychology Major in the Bachelor of Arts vs. Psychology Major in the Bachelor of Science<\/a><\/dt>

Both the B.A. (Honours) and the B.Sc. (Honours) in Psychology require 20.0 credits for the degree; nine of these credits are from Psychology.<\/p>\n

In addition to the number of courses in fourth year, Honours students either design and carry out a supervised research Honours Thesis or participate in an Honours Project.<\/p>\n

I plan to apply to graduate school in Psychology. Which one is better: a B.A. or a B.Sc.?<\/a><\/dt>

<\/p>\n

The short answer is that it does not matter. Both degrees in Psychology will allow you to apply to graduate programs in Psychology. A longer answer might be that it depends. For instance, if a student were applying to a graduate program in Neurocognitive Psychology, then some relevant natural sciences courses or even a B.Sc. might be advisable. In contrast, if a student were interested in applied graduate research in Forensic Psychology, then some related courses in the humanities or a B.A. might be the best choice. Typically, however, potential supervisors will focus on the quality of students\u2019 background preparation and not on the exact name of the Psychology degree on the diploma.<\/p>\n

What can I do with a career in Psychology?<\/a><\/dt>

It may be a clich\u00e9 and you\u2019ve likely heard this before: it\u2019s important to be working in an area about which you have passion and a desire to learn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Being engaged with your studies and career will contribute to your health, happiness, and productivity. Please know that is normal for it to take some time to figure out your path and where you belong; most of your colleagues are in the same position.<\/p>\n

\nThe practicum offers students the opportunity to gain experience in a range of applied psychology settings with the goal of integrating academic and practical aspects of psychology.<\/p>\n

What is the Co-op option, and how can I add it to my degree?<\/a><\/dt>

<\/p>\n

The Co-op option is available to B.A. (Honours) and B.Sc. (Honours) students in psychology and affords opportunities for students to implement their psychological knowledge and skills across a variety of settings including government departments, community agencies, and the private sector.<\/p>\n

How do I apply?<\/p>\n

  1. Apply directly from high school via the Ontario University Application Center Website<\/a>. You must apply to Carleton\u2019s B.A. (Honours) with a Major in Psychology program or B.Sc. (Honours) with a Major in Psychology program and select the Co-op option.<\/li>\n
  2. Apply by the end of your 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0year of study at Carleton University (application form<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
