How do we deal with anxiety and stress? What are the differences between happy and unhappy people? What makes a person commit a crime? How can we reduce shyness and bullying? How are language and math skills acquired?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10498\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 364px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10498\" title=\"Quad\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/wp-content\/uploads\/362_30552410793_30550100793_1035048_7753_n-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"242\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carleton has offered undergraduate degrees in Psychology since 1953 and graduate degrees in Psychology since 1961<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Understanding the mechanisms that underlie the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of people is the basic goal of psychology. The discipline of psychology offers a wide variety of explanations to account for behaviour. Such an understanding not only has theoretical value but also the potential for practical, real-world applications.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Psychology currently offers <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/undergraduate-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">undergraduate programs<\/a> in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/graduate-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate<\/a> programs in psychology are offered at both the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/graduate-studies\/graduate\/master-of-arts\/\">master&#8217;s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/graduate-studies\/prospective-grad-students\/doctor-of-philosophy\/\">doctoral<\/a> levels. Psychology is a part of the University&#8217;s program in Criminology and Criminal Justice, as well as the Child Studies program offered by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies.<\/p>\n<p>We offer opportunities to explore all psychology&#8217;s major areas and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/concentrations\/\">concentrations<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/research\/research-areas\/personality-social\/\">Personality and Social<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/research\/research-areas\/health\/\">Health<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/research\/research-areas\/forensic\/\">Forensic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/research\/research-areas\/cognition-perception\/\">Cognitive<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/research\/research-areas\/developmental\/\">Developmental<\/a>.
